What is canthal tilt?

Canthal tilt is the angle between the inner corner of your eye (the medial canthus) and the outer corner (the lateral canthus), measured against a horizontal line. If the outer corner sits higher, the tilt is positive; level is neutral; lower is negative. It is one of the most talked-about eye metrics in looksmaxxing because it shapes whether eyes read alert or tired.

Canthal tilt ranges

TiltAngleHow it reads
Positiveabove +4°Alert, sharp, the hunter-eyes look
Neutral0° to +4°Balanced, where most people land
Negativebelow 0°Softer, can read tired in photos

Average tilt differs between people and ethnic groups, so treat the bands as a guide, not a verdict.

How this test measures it

  1. A face model finds 478 points on your face, including both corners of each eye.
  2. Your head tilt is removed by levelling the face on the line through your inner eye corners.
  3. We measure the angle from each inner corner to its outer corner, in degrees.
  4. Both eyes are averaged into your canthal tilt, and the gap between them shows eye asymmetry.

For the most accurate reading: camera at eye level, face straight on, eyes relaxed and open, no wide-angle selfie lens up close. Phone front cameras held too near the face exaggerate tilt.

Canthal tilt vs hunter eyes

A positive tilt is one ingredient of hunter eyes, along with deep-set eyes, little upper-eyelid exposure and a strong brow ridge. Your tilt also feeds your overall PSL score, but it is only one of 40+ things that decide how a face is rated. The full AI face scan scores all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good canthal tilt?

A positive canthal tilt of roughly +4 to +8 degrees is usually rated most attractive, because the outer corners sitting slightly higher reads alert and youthful. Most people measure between 0 and +6 degrees. Anything a little below zero is common too and is not a flaw on its own.

How accurate is this canthal tilt test?

It finds 478 points on your face and measures the angle between your inner and outer eye corners, after levelling your head. Expect about 1 to 2 degrees of variation between photos, mostly from camera angle, expression and lens distortion. Use a straight-on photo at eye level, eyes relaxed and open, and take the average of two or three photos.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The face model downloads to your browser and the measurement runs on your device. The photo is never sent to our servers or stored.

Can you change your canthal tilt?

The bony angle is set, but how tilted your eyes look is not. Brow shape and position, under-eye hollowness, puffiness, lighting and camera angle all change the perceived tilt. Surgery (canthoplasty) exists but carries real risks and is not something to chase from one photo.

What is the difference between canthal tilt and hunter eyes?

Canthal tilt is one measurement: the angle of the eye. Hunter eyes is a whole look: positive tilt plus deep-set eyes, low upper-eyelid exposure and a strong brow. You can have a positive tilt without hunter eyes.
